The enemy comes hard after the children of God. 1 Peter 5:8 states that, “Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” There is no doubt that if one seeks to do God’s will he is going to receive opposition. The adversary’s deepest desire is not that God’s will be done, but that his will be done and the master’s subverted. This isn’t especially comforting news. Frankly I’d rather forget about the whole mess. Yet wishing away reality only makes us vulnerable to attack, while resembling an ostrich with its head in the sand, which seems like a ploy of the enemy.

The work of the great deceiver is that he seeks to lead people to walk in the world, the flesh, and his lies. If he can get people to fearfully focus upon him our worship is averted from God. If we ignore him altogether, then his schemes will go largely unnoticed and draw us away from worshiping God, yet again. This is the constant battle that rages around us and if we don’t think it exists we are blind. In Ephesians 6:12 we read, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”

Reading the context of the passage in Ephesians will reveal God’s word calling His children to rage against the enemy in a battle with heavenly armament, seeking an active obedience of faith. Scripture is calling the children of God to vigilance and preparedness.

Apparently avoiding the inevitable only leads to total unpreparedness, which isn’t the fast track to faithfulness. The beauty of these Scriptural warnings is that they are meant to prepare us. If we also read the greater context of 1 Peter 5:8–9a we will see the preparatory words “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith…”

Resist the enemy by faith in Jesus Christ. Seek to walk in the truth of God, the righteousness of Jesus Christ, as you run in the gospel of God. While wielding the sword of His Spirit, the Word of God, and the shield of faith, rejoice in the covering of salvation, as you pray at all times. Stand against the schemes of the devil, because they are there whether you pay attention to them or not.
