Wisdom III

Sophistry abounds in modern academies, colleges, and schools. Fallacious arguments woven as a pronouncement of man’s wisdom only smack of arrogant folly. Mankind has become wise in his own eyes, which isn’t to say man does only horrible things, but that humanity is blindly convinced of its own awesomeness.

Wisdom is the possession of experience, understanding, knowledge, and proper judgment. The question then is, ‘what is the basis for such evaluation?’ Who has adequate experience, understanding, knowledge, and proper judgment? It seems clear that one might have vast experience building a house, understanding the framing structures, possessing knowledge to navigate a project from start to finish with perfect judgement. Does that make this same person wise when it comes to another avenue of life? What about the builder who builds with different yet equally effective methods? Whose to say who is wise? Or who is a fool? Who sets the standard?

The answer is simple; God’s wisdom is the standard. His decisions are always right and true. Without fail He exercises perfect wisdom in all decisions and deeds. Plumbing the depths of this answer is simple, but not easy.

Scriptures speak clearly concern wisdom, and in particular God’s wisdom. Job 9:4, “He is wise in heart and mighty in strength —who has hardened himself against him, and succeeded?” Job 12:13, With God are wisdom and might; he has counsel and understanding.” Psalm 104:24, “O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.” Romans 16:27 “to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.” It would serve God’s people well to apply themselves to the wisdom of God, as revealed in His Holy Word.
